Why doesn’t MTV play music anymore?

I don’t have time to get under the skin of lol funny YouTube videos anymore – they have to come to me. And, look what did…

A unofficial video parodying a fan asking the head of MTV why the network doesn’t play music videos anymore is given their answer in a full-blown ‘those days are gone’ rant.

Uploaded less than a week ago, the clip’s already drummed up more than 1 million views and it brings the topic of a tuneless music channel to the front of all viewers’ minds: “They’ve got a point there, it doesn’t play much music anymore.”

From Jersey Shore and Geordie Shore to Sweet 16 and The Valleys, MTV’s certainly indulging itself, and us, with lots of reality TV. Now people areΒ laughing at the concept across the globe – the video’s gone viral.

MTV’s apparently responded to creator Brian Firenzi’s, of 5 Second Films, clip on Twitter and hasΒ even gone as far as to agree with him. But, other than the acknowledgement, the brand is still transmittingΒ radio silence.

MTV’s right to laugh at it, but it should be doing a lot more to respond to the millions that agree with Brian’s point of view. Managed correctly, it’s a great PR opportunity to communicate that it’s still in touch with whatΒ viewers want.

PR: Lost in translation

23 Oct

Have you ever spoken so passionately in client meetings that you don’t even understand what your saying? You know the meetings I mean – pitching in that big idea to get closer to your contacts to show them what you can do.

Today, I’ve done something similar. I’ve spoken a pidgin English; a combination of PR and social media buzz words that have, quite frankly, scared me at times to the point that I don’t even know what they mean anymore. Can you put me right?

1. Influencers
Who are these people? Working in food, drink and hospitality I assumed they were high-profile chefs but now they could be a figment of my imagination.

2. Engage
I’ve promised to engage with so many people today. I’ve positioned that I’ll do this by becoming everyone’s favourite brand to follow. In reality, could this be just a quick ‘hello’?

3. Drive traffic
It’s been such a long time since I was behind the wheel, but I’m acting like a Formula One racer, driving online traffic here, there and everywhere with instant wins.

4. Leverage
I’ve boasted about leveraging resources, contacts, sponsorships and followers today to grow our brand awareness on Twitter ten-fold. Surely this can’t all be done by one person? Help!

5. Network
Social networks, chef networks and consumer networks. Oh, what a tangled web we weave. This is going to be confusing.

So, that’s my day in five words. How would you sum up yours? Do you need a PR-English dictionary to bring you back to reality?

Can Brit bloggers turn on the BBC?

15 Oct

US bloggers are hogging the limelight right now – broadcaster CBS has bought the rights to transform Tumblr blog Hollywood Assistants into a TV comedy series called 20-Nothings, according to digital and social media newsfeed Mashable. If you’ve not had a look before, do – this video and picture led blog is very tongue in cheek and lends itself to comedy.

It’s not the first time this has happened. Comedy S*** My Dad Says, featuring William Shatner, started life as a Twitter feed which hit the silver screen in 2010. Across the pond, us Brits have also had a fair crack at turning our blogs into books and series: Secret Diary of a Call Girl, most notable.

But, with more blogs grabbing producers and writers’ attention, their authors are the key to producing the subtlest form of reality TV – one that the audience doesn’t even know they’re watching. A programme motivated by an average individual’s life, passions and motivations.

From PC to TV, this is a fantastic achievement for social media. Not only can this medium raise brand awareness, it also raises ratings.

All I need to do now is continue pitching in to the BBC the concept of a twenty-something PR ready to take over the world from an office in Croydon.
