DVD release has people running for their mums

Hotel chains are definitely upping their game when it comes to PR stunts and marketing campaigns.

It was only last week that I blogged about Ibis’ bunny room and now Holiday Inn has caught my eye.

Holiday Inn Camden partnered with Universal Pictures’new thriller Mama and transformed one of its rooms into terrifying horror experience –
to celebrate its DVD release.

Open for one week only – free to selected guests that booked in advance – the #SurviveMAMA experience promises to ‘shake the public’s nerve and resilience’, throwing guests into key moments and elements of the film.

I salute Fever PR and AtmosFEAR! for putting this together. Now I’m only guessing, but coming up with innovative campaigns to promote DVDs – where the twist or special effects from the film have already been seen – must be tricky with a capital ‘T’. Not only is this experience-led activity attention grabbing, but it also generates unique content.

Clever content is a PR’s best friend when engaging with journalists, giving them another reason and angle to write about the film. The stunt also looks like it was very well executed with authentic props, costumes and scare actors. The video resembles an after hours trip to London Dungeons and I’m pretty sure if I’d gone along I’d have had an accident. But, I’ve never been a fan of scaring myself for fun!

The campaign has generated lots of blog coverage in phase one – inviting consumers to apply for free tickets – but post-event write ups are more difficult to find. I’ve spotted an article on the Daily Express – which might be an exclusive. Besides chasing national coverage, if I was Fever I’d have partnered with the likes of Shortlist and Total Film for additional in-depth features.

But, social media is a different story. Twitter is buzzing with different mentions of the campaign, so with a tight digital evaluation process Fever will deliver an incredible reach for its client – while impressing Holiday Inn (a brand currently missing from its portfolio).

Wise move. Brilliant idea. Great campaign.

Ibis bunnies storm the hotel

It’s been a busy few days for me in the PR world, but when I saw this campaign I literally dropped my phone, picked it up and started writing this blog.

Warning: This PR campaign by Ibis Hotels almost tips the cute scale.

Ibis’ new campaign to promote its range of hotels – now featuring the chains’ most comfortable bed ever – stars bunny rabbits as part of a one minute promotional YouTube video.

Forty bunnies took leading roles in the video, and were given permission to enjoy a top-floor room at the company’s Blackfriars branch over two days, in a bid to find the most comfortable spot to sleep.

Although I’m not familiar with the music, which tends to help turn a good video into a viral one (am I the only person on earth that’s never seen Chitty Chitty Bang Bang?), it’s a brilliant video that reaches out to meet consumers’ needs. After all, when booking rooms – whether it’s for a business meeting, girls’ weekend or to break up a journey – what really matters is a good night’s sleep.

Ibis’ key competitors have previously marketed their small touches that make customers feel special – Premier Inn’s pillow wrap, which highlights the softness of the bedding, and Travelodge’s soft toy ‘Sleep Tight‘ campaigns have been successful, but it’s this gentle and inviting video that’s really putting the message across.

The outtakes video, also produced by BETC London, is stronger in my opinion because it brings the campaign to life by telling Ibis’ campaign story. For example, did you know that 571 carrots were used in the making of this video?

Overall, it’s great content that’s already making waves in the hospitality, travel and leisure press – it’s interesting, sweet and well executed. Here’s to the bunnies.

April Fools: a dish best served with PR

1 Apr

20130401-100015.jpg

Pinch, punch first of the month and no returns white rabbit. Gotcha!

Now that’s over with it’s time to remember another special day in the PR calendar: April Fools.

So, let’s get straight to it. Here’s a nod to some top brave brands that have mixed the right ingredients (a pinch of believability, an ounce of doubt and a sprinkle of brashness all blended and baked for 20min on ‘creativity’) to make some clever, and suspect, PR-driven April Fools’ Day stories.

1. Virgin’s glass-bottomed jet
Branson announced today that his empire – Virgin – has developed the technology to introduce the world’s first glass-bottomed plane (pictured above.) One word. Genius.

2. SPAM launches Easter egg
This year the obvious news hook for April Fools is Easter, but this campaign just reeks of chopped up ham. Apparently SPAM has extended its range with an Easter egg including mini ham treats covered in chocolate – an unusual and delightful pairing (pictured below.) Available in supermarkets today, that’s the giveaway.

3. Mumsnet launches vajazzling course
Online parenting community Mumsnet has launched a vajazzling course for members including a keynote talk from former TOWIE star Amy Childs. Why? Because, as any new mum knows, appearance is the first luxury to be sacrificed when caring for a baby. In my mind the Mumsnet members are vicious roller derby players with babes in arms. They’re definitely not to be messed with. Vajazzle, really?

4. Twitter tax
Twitter has announced that it’ll begin charging tweeters for using vowels – although foreign language options will remain unaffected. For $5 a month, users can update to its premium service where all letters are available. A good try because it does make you look twice.

5. Cats crackdown on yobs in Croydon
There’s times when I have to represent Croydon and this is it. A faux feline story reports that cats are being trained and given top technology to patrol antisocial areas before reporting back to the authorities and the cats’ HQ: the Mobile Evening Observation Wing (or Meow for short.)

Spotted any more? Drop me a line and I’ll add it to the hall of fame.
